The National Institute for Health Research

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) was created in April 2006 under the 2005 Government strategy for health research: Best Research for Best Health. It is ‘the research arm of the NHS’ and collectively represents all publicly-funded research in the NHS. It administers research funding through a number of streams.

Research Design Service South East

The Research Design Service South East is a collaboration between the Centre for Health Services Studies (CHSS) at the University of Kent, the School of Health Sciences at the University of Brighton and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey.

The RDS South East provides support to individuals and teams of researchers undertaking health and social care-related research. Their Research Adviser team can help with developing and submitting research protocols to national peer reviewed funding programmes.

The Research Development Team have expertise and knowledge in:

  • Providing dedicated support for high value, strategic and/or complex funding applications

  • Administering the Central Peer Review process

The UK Research Office

The UK Research Office (UKRO) is the European office of the 7 UK Research Councils. It is also the national contact point for the UK Marie Curie and the European Research Council (ERC). It provides information on the latest news, opportunities and insight into EU research programmes and policies.

UKRO’s mission is to promote effective UK engagement in EU research, innovation and higher education activities, by:

  • Enabling the UK research community to make informed decisions about participation in EU programmes and to maximise the opportunities available to them;
  • Supporting UK input into European research policy development and implementation through informing and interfacing with the appropriate bodies; and
  • Developing and maintaining a suite of quality services that meet the evolving needs of sponsors and subscribers.

The Office operates on a membership basis, receiving subscriptions from universities and other research organisations in the UK, as well from some non-UK organisations. The UKRO Subscriber Services pages are accessible to registered subscribers only. If you are based at a subscribing organisation you can access their services by creating your own profile, a quick and simple process requiring only your institutional email address.

Research and Development Department at Frimley Park Hospital

The research and development department at Frimley Park Hospital aims to assist the development of the evidence base used to inform the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of illness through clinical trials. The hospital is taking part in an increasing number of clinical trials. They are an active partner of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Clinical Research Network (KSSCRN), encouraging UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN) portfolio trials into the hospital.
